Countdown to Halloween – Day 20: Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (1959)
Cast:      John Merivale as Dr. John Fielding
Didi Perego as Ellen Fielding
Gerard Herter as Gunther

Written by Filippo Sanjust
Directed by Riccardo Freda & Mario Bava

Plot: Archaeologists are investigating some Mayan ruins when they come across a strange, blob-like creature. After destroying it, a remaining piece is taken to a lab for further study but soon begins to expand. A comet is also due to pass Earth just as it did during the time of the Mayans. Is there a possible connection?

Personal Thoughts: It had been quite a few years since I’d seen Caltiki and it was a rather poor bootleg copy, which was the only way we could see Caltiki for many years. Thanks to Arrow Video, this is now available on DVD and Blu-ray in a beautifully clear version that enhances the experience I had so many years ago. While I do think the story tends to drag on a little and suffers from a slower pace, watching it in its’ original Italian with English subtitles is truly the way to go. The monster reminds me of something we’d see Quatermass battle, which is a good thing. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Trivia:

  • Mario Bava was brought in to finish the film courtesy of his friend Riccardo Freida.
  • Despite it’s low-budget and initially poor reception, Caltiki has become a cult favorite due to its’ lack of mainstream availability until earlier this year.
  • Featured on episode 165 of the B Movie Cast podcast, hosted by the late Vince Rotolo.

Availability: Available on an official home video release for the first time in Blu-ray from Arrow Video.
